Thursday, November 19, 2009 from 7:00 PM - 10:00 PM (ET)
On Thursday, November 19, join us for An EVENING of GRACE and THANKSGIVING when Harlem CARES Mentoring Movement and Harlem World Magazine proudly announce our commitment to the children of the community through our creation of a partnership with a purpose titled Harlem CARES Bridge to Mentor Power, an offering of gifts of support and promise to our vulnerable young. Please show that you care, and be with us for a moving and memorable evening of celebration and good works. Susan L. Taylor, Editor-In-Chief Emeritus of ESSENCE magazine and Founder of the National CARES Mentoring Movement will deliver a Thanksgiving address about the healing power of gratitude and creating joy and peace in our lives and community. Hosted by NAACP Image Award-winning actor Malik Yoba, star of ABC's"Defying Gravity," the evening features Grammy-Award winning singer Maya Azucena, who believes music is a tool for healing and activism; DJ Shogun, celebrity man of wax; a special performance by the Mt. Pleasant Community Church Choir; and other outstanding acts. The evening is also a tribute to the achievements of Mt. Pleasant Christian Academy. A jewel in our community, the not-for-profit educational institution provides a safe and challenging academic program for students from pre-K through high school. Many challenges face the school for the future, such as property tax changes, facilities, and capital requirements. Yet, all MPCA students maintain a 95% grade point average and 86% of MPCA students graduate and enroll in college. Research indicates that schools similarly situated have an average life of about five years. Founder and principal, Dr. Charles D. Eatman, who opened the school in 1982, will receive the Trailblazer Award. AN EVENING of GRACE and THANKSGIVING provides two ways for the community to share its gift of giving--tickets may be purchased for either the performance only or for the VIP Reception and performance. Your donation is $20.00 per person for a ticket to the 8:30 p.m. performance hosted by Malik Yoba with performances by Yoba, Maya Azucena, Mt. The Harlem CARES Mentoring Movement includes the volunteers of the Harlem CARES Mentor-Recruitment Circle, a local affiliate of the National Cares Mentoring Movement, founded by Susan Taylor, as Essence CARES. It has grown into a coalition of trusted local and national, civic, organization, government, business, political and community leaders, committed to working together to solve the escalating crisis among our underserved young.
Harlem CARES is a recruiting organization that connects with caring Black adults and directs them to existing mentoring and youth-support organizations within the Harlem community. Our Circle is actively recruiting potential mentors on a daily basis, connecting with them about what it takes to be a mentor, directing mentors to organizations in need, and quantifying the success of the Circle via various tracking tools.
To help answer the call to secure our vulnerable youngsters, the Harlem CARES Mentor-Training Sessions are conducted the third Tuesday and the fourth Saturday of each month. You only need to attend one session to begin the process of becoming a mentor. Please register for a Harlem Cares Mentor-Training Session by emailing harlemcaresmentoringmovement@gmail.com
Please add, “I want to be a mentor” in the subject line with your full name and email address in the body of the email.
If you are an organization in need of mentors please contact Community Organization Liaison Cynthia Alvarez-Williams at cdralvarez@yahoo.com or Community Organization Liaison Janaye Ingram at janaye@theexchangegroup.com. Since its incorporation on June 18th 2009, Harlem CARES has recruited 174 prospective mentors who CARE to help save the next generation.
